Thank you for your support of the Milltown Dam Project. The Milltown Dam Cam officially ceased recording images from the project site as of January 7, 2011. Below are two time-lapse videos with footage from the Dam Cam:
Watch "The Clark Fork Comes Home," a short video produced by Damon Ristau and the Firewater Film Company that captures some of the emotion from last December when the Clark Fork began running in its new channel shortly after the final breach.
The Milltown bluff is a good place to see the river in its new channel. Please use caution if you visit the bluff, and stay away from the edge, which can be slippery and rocky. Click here for a map to the bluff.
One year later, on March 27th, 2009, Envirocon breached the spillway channel by excavating a trench from the river toward a pool below the bluff - where the spillway used to stand. About a fifth of the river flowed into the historic channel under the bluff, where the Clark Fork flowed before the dam was built. On the following Monday (March 31) Envirocon removed additional sediment from the cofferdam, and about 70% of the river's flow moved into the historic channel. Upstream of the former dam, Envirocon loaded 2.1 million cubic yards of contaminated reservoir sediment onto 45 train cars per day to ship to the ARCO-BP repository near Opportunity. The last trainload of sediments rolled away in late 2009. Now, the State of Montana is working to restore a natural river channel and floodplain in the former reservoir area.
High Plains Films has been documenting the work going on in Montana’s Bonner/Milltown community outside of Missoula, where the Milltown Dam has just been removed, allowing the Clark Fork River to flow freely for the first time in 100 years.
