All hardrock mining law in the United States is governed by the antiquated General Mining Law of 1872. This law does not dictate any environmental provisions that mining companies must follow, allowing hardrock mines to leave massive destruction in their wake, including often irreparable harms to wildlife, landscapes, and water quality. State and federal agencies are often left to foot the bill for cleanup of toxic mine sites across he country.
